Frequently asked questions

I can't get the videos to work

To watch the videos on SoundJunction you need to install Shockwave and Quicktime plug-ins. See Installing plug-ins for more information.

I can't get the Explorer tool to work

To use the Explorer tool, you need to install the latest Shockwave and Quicktime plug-ins. See Installing plug-ins for more information. If you have the latest versions installed and are still having problems, please see Explorer tool troubleshooting.

What is the Explorer Tool?

The Explorer allows you to listen to recordings of the three SoundJunction pieces and watch video footage of the musicians as they perform. You can deconstruct the music and listen to different groups of instruments or single parts. As the music plays, flags appear inviting you to visit articles related to the music you are hearing. Simply click on the Explorer icon in the left hand column.

What is an Explorer close-up?

The Explorer close-ups take small sections of a SoundJunction piece. The user is then able to see how the individual instrumental lines fit together, change the volumes of different parts, delete bars, move bars around etc. The close-ups are designed to allow you to experiment with the music and hear what the section would sound like if the composer had made different compositional decisions.

What is the Composer Tool?

The Composer lets you create your own music by mixing elements from the SoundJunction commissioned pieces and sample library. Copy any sounds from the pieces on to a clipboard and combine them with other sounds from the cample library to compose your own music. You can manipulate the music, use different combinations of instruments or voices, add a new rhythm to an existing melody and much more. Click on the Composer Forum button in the left hand column to hear other people's pieces.

What is a learning trail?

A learning trail is a pre-determined path though the site. When you use a Learning Trail, SoundJunction will display only the navigation needed for that particular trail, providing a clear pathway for learners to travel along. If you click on the learning trail forum in the left hand column you will discover a whole range of learning trails, from journeys about individual musicians’ lives to journeys exploring the use of the seed rhythm in the three commissions.

Who can make a Learning trail?

You can save and publish a Learning trail, either privately or to the Learning trail forum, if you have SoundJunction Advanced User Status. See Advanced User Status for more information.

Will more content be added to SoundJunction in the future?

More pages will be added to SoundJunction over the next few months. These pages will include more contextual information. When new information appears it will be advertised on the home page.

Will SoundJunction be working with more remix artists?

There are plans for more musicians to remix the SoundJunction music over the next few months. These musicians will all have their own section on the site so you will be able to find out about their background, how they went about starting their remix and many will offer advice on the best way to get started.

I’m a musician. How can I get involved?

If you think you have something to offer SoundJunction, be it a new piece of music or some exciting samples, please contact us through the feedback area in the bottom right hand corner.
