Clare Finnimore: violin or viola?

Little by little, the viola became Clare's instrument of first choice

WHILE CLARE WAS at the Guildhall, she started to think about her choice of instrument.

Once again, chance played a part. One day, Clare swapped her violin for a viola with a friend for the first time. Clare just loved the feel of the different instrument. The viola brought her many new musical opportunities and experiences. Little by little, the viola became Clare’s instrument of first choice, and she enjoyed the ensemble opportunities it offered.

As time went by, Clare enjoyed some encouraging successes with her new instrument. Apart from ensemble playing, she became more and more interested in the viola’s repertoire. She then decided she would go out and get playing engagements as a viola player. Before she knew it, she says, she was a viola player!
