Eska Mtungwazi: so you want to be a singer?

Eska on a coffee break, SJ recording session

As a singer it is just as important to understand what is going on underneath the melody, as Eska Mtungwazi explains...

UNLIKE IN CLASSICAL MUSIC or pop, vocalists have sometimes been looked down on by jazz instrumentalists. In the past, jazz players were often obliged to play the pop hits of their era to make a living, when their real desire was to play the unpredictable, improvised music they wanted, without commercial restrictions. Bandleaders therefore hired singers to make the music more accessible to the public, and the players resented it, contemptuously labelling the vocalists ‘canaries’.

But part of the problem was that the instrumentalists knew a lot about how music worked technically, and the singers – hired simply because they had nice voices and looked good – often knew very little musical theory. Eska Mtungwazi insists that for a singer to be adaptable to any situation, and to be able to improvise well, a deeper musical understanding is very important.
