Gareth Williams: experimenting with chords

Gareth began to experiment with different chords at an early age.

Piano keyboard with perfect fifth intervals in pentatonic scale

WHEN GARETH WILLIAMS BEGAN to play in his first jazz bands, they were traditional ones – playing blues, simple swing tunes, marches and ballads. The chords weren’t complicated, and most of the melodies anybody improvised were no more difficult than the songs they were based on.

But that wasn’t enough for Gareth Williams, who wanted to try out the ideas he’d been working on for using alternative chords to the ones originally written for the song.
