Joy Farrall: listening for pleasure

A selection of records and cds

What music do professional players listen to in their spare time? Clarinet-player Joy Farrall talks about her Desert Island Discs

JOY FARRALL has a family, so naturally the choice of music in her home is very varied. While Joy likes to listen to classical music, her children prefer the latest pop.

Listening to music for relaxation when you perform it professionally sometimes sounds a little unusual. But thankfully the classical music field is very wide, so you can nearly always find something that is completely different to what you play as a professional. However, it is sometimes difficult to turn off your critical listening – you can’t help analysing how well something is being played or sung, how good the music is, and even, for those with perfect pitch, what key the music is in and how it is constructed.

Despite this, most musicians do manage to find a way of listening to music for the same pleasure that non-musicians feel. They wouldn’t be professional musicians if they didn't enjoy music, at least some of the time!
