SAX-PLAYER Julian Siegel's parents were music enthusiasts, and had a big record collection ranging from 1930s swing saxophonist Ben Webster to classical composer Gustav Mahler.

When his parents were out, Julian used to play the albums to himself, marvelling at the sounds. And sometimes he would shut himself in the room with the family piano and get lost in the mysteries of a strange-sounding chord...
