JULIAN'S father is from Poland, and at one time he was a professional musician, too: a singer, in the years before the second world war. In the 1940s, the war forced Julian's father to leave home, and he joined the Polish army, still singing, but now as an entertainer for the troops.

After the war, when he moved to England, he got out of music and started a clothing business in Nottingham, where Julian grew up. But if he wasn't able to support the family as a musician, neither he, nor Julian's mother, ever lost their love of music and, as a child, Julian Siegel was always aware of that. Nor did they consider one kind of music to be superior to another: they loved classical music and jazz equally, on the basis that it doesn't matter what kind of music it is, as long as it's good.

Julian's father would sometimes take him down to London to hear a big jazz concert. At the same time, his older brother was introducing him to 1970s progressive rock and punk...
