Origin mix: choosing the right ideas

Cleveland chose elements that ‘grabbed’ him from the original songs to remix for a drum ‘n’ bass audience

When creating the Origin mix for SoundJunction Cleveland listened closely to David Horne’s Emerging Dances, Jason Yarde’s Where Will It Take You? and Tunde Jegede’s Moving Away, and then identified the parts of each song that made an impact on him. He knew that these elements would feature in his remix. Here are Cleveland’s selections:

He took two notes from the double bass line of Emerging Dances:

The vocal of Eska Mtungwazi that was originally part of Jason Yarde’s Where Will It Take You? was also used.

There was also Paul Gladstone Reid’s vocal from Moving Away:

As well as the electric guitar played by Derek Johnson on Moving Away.

These were the elements from the three original songs that ‘grabbed’ Cleveland. Once he had decided to use them, it was important for him to find a way of make them hang together in a remix for a specific audience: drum ‘n’ bass.
