You are just as likely to hear the trombone in a jazz band as you are in a classical orchestra. There are lots of different sizes of trombone – these range from the smaller and therefore higher sounding soprano trombones to the deep bass trombones.

What’s it made of?

The trombone is a member of the brass family and like the other instruments in this group it is made primarily from brass.

How is it played?

The trombone player changes the note on the instrument by altering the shape of their lips, moving the slide backwards and forwards and by blowing at different intensities. Because of the slide the trombone is able to slide between notes creating some fantastic effects.

What does it sound like?

Because of the slide the trombone is able to slide between notes creating some fantastic effects.
