David Horne’s Emerging Dances uses lots of ‘rubato’. This means the pulse isn’t rigid; the instruments don’t stick to the same time signature throughout the piece. This is very different to Tunde Jegede’s Moving Away where the pulse is very rigid. However, the kora in that song has a very free-flowing, almost elastic feel to it. This intrigued Dennis who realized that he could use the kora with other elements from David Horne’s piece and Jason Yarde’s piece.
