Promise Land: stretching the time

Dennis Rollins explains how he produced an unusual time signature in part of his remix

Dennis started to manipulate certain elements. He used a technique called ‘time stretching’ and in doing so he created an unusual time signature for the next section of his mix.

9/4 is not a commonly used time signature. You heard Dennis count 9 beats to the bar divided into a group of 4 beats then 5 beats. Much pop music is in 4/4 but occasionally a song might be in 5/4 or 7/4. Pink Floyd’s Money is in 7/4. Listen to the piece and count the beats to the bar just as Dennis did.
