The flute: the keys

Flute keys

It looks complicated, but the principles of the flute are fairly simple. Anna Pyne explains

THE DIFFERENT PITCHES of the flute are achieved by the fingers uncovering holes which these days are covered by padded keys – unlike the early days of the flute when the fingers covered open holes.

Flute design is changing even today, and some have returned to a small number of open holes which are covered by the player's fingers.

Anna Pyne explains how the keys are operated on the flute, and what sort of effects can be achieved.
