The seed rhythm: now you hear it, now you don’t

A double bass

What does the bass part do with the seed rhythm?

Seed rhythm

Here’s the seed rhythm Jason Yarde took as an inspiration for Where will it take you?

Bass, bars 3-4

And here’s the first part of the opening bassline from Where will it take you?

The original SoundJunction rhythm is not exactly the same as the bassline being played by Larry Bartley. But it has what musicians would call the same ‘feel’.

A rhythm can be played in many ways. You don’t have to hit the drums in exactly the same way each time, you don’t have to play exactly the same notes of a melody. As long as the music is written or improvised so that underlying feel is always there, listeners will continue to be aware of it.

But as well as having the same feel, the seed rhythm is in fact in the bass part. Here’s the bass part with the seed rhythm mixed in as well – it’s just that the seed starts after the bass: it's been displaced.
