My parents met ballroom dancing, so that’s as musical as they got. So music didn’t really play a big part in my childhood, but I lived next door, or opposite the Salvation Army hall. So on a Sunday afternoon they would march down the road and one Sunday, I was probably playing marbles in the street, as you do as a kid, they asked me to go and have a look. They had a very enthusiastic young peoples’ band leader at the time, who got me very interested in playing a brass instrument and gave me a euphonium, quite good at the euphonium, and then they gave me a trombone.
