SO that…you can pluck at string and that vibration will happen. But also we use a bow if you want something more legato, or long and singing then you will use a bow to elongate that sound (plays) so that is basically and elongation of that. I don’t know if you can see that on the camera but if I twang that string and then bow it (plays) You can see the string vibrate in exactly the same way but for a bit longer. There are very many different effects you can get with a bow. The most useful one is the (plays) the long singing tone which string instruments are renowned for and you don’t have to take a breath so you can go on forever with it. Which I can talk about at length. > So there are other effects you can get which are shorter note (plays) um spicatto (plays) very short notes. Um you can almost throw the bow against the string (plays) this being ricochet. The bow is made to balance, in fact if I find the right balancing point, if I find the right spot the bow will actually um balance. And it is very slightly different in each bow….there! So you can see it is very much heavier at this end than it is at that end. Now if you get that point the bow will therefore balance on the string without me needing to do very much with my right hand. And so my hand really guides the bow across the strings. Um now the bow is made, is very bouncy, it is a very bouncy thing and so you can use that natural bounce if you like to produce different sounds so (plays) you can bounce the bow.We usually play with the bow in between these points – the bridge and the end of the finger board. You can actually play over the finger board, or sul tasto to give it a posh Italian name, which makes a more breathy sound(plays). And so instead of (plays) because the string is slightly more slack further over the fingerboard. It gets harder; the sound of the string gets harder as it gets closer to the bridge. so then you get sul pont, which means on the bridge (plays). Which is sort of a quite glassy effect that some composers call for. The more modern the music the more different effects one can use. There is also behind the bridge which is (plays) which is an interesting effect sometimes used. So of course you can change the way you play with the bow and that changes the sound as well. So col legno which means with the wood, which means instead of playing with the hair of the bow you play with the wood of the bow (plays) and again a very particular effect. Not many people like to play with the wood of the bow because the bow is quite expensive, but! There we go. You can also play pizzicato on the instrument which is just plucking with the right hand (plays) and fingering with the left. You can also play left hand pizzicato which involves plucking the sting the string with the left hand at the same time as (plays) I can’t do it very well that’s the problem. : Yeah sometimes violinist we are required to play as in the banjo position like the guitar. Not some often but it is an effect, it is a very good effect (plays). It means you can do the strum really.
