Colin started with the most fundamental of musical elements when doing his remix: drums. He took a bass drum beat – a ‘kick’ - and a ‘handclap snare.’
As you can tell, Colin is crossing many musical boundaries. The basic rhythm track, through its use of cymbals, has a jazz swing feel to it. Yet at the same time, several other types of beat are implied: there is a Latin-American feel, what we call a ‘clave’ rhythm from Cuba. And there is also a hint of ‘broken beat’. This is a genre from London that also has a ‘clave’ style rhythm but there is a different character to it.
As the name suggests, ‘broken beat’ feels like the beat has a little bit of a stutter. The notes in the pulse are short and sharp, creating a choppy feel. Try dancing to this beat.
